Abstract

“Try to tell me the good brought by Muhammad and you will only find harm and inhumanity, such as his commandment to diffusing the religion that he preached of by using the sword” (Benedictus XVI 2006). This is what the Byzantine emperor Emmanuel II Paliologos once said and what the Roman Catholic pope Benedict repeated during his speech at the German University of Regensburg on September 12, 2006. This citation was severely criticized by both Muslims and non-Muslims, as well as European politicians, despite the fact that the Pope expressed that he did not share the Emperor’s opinion. This text that Benedict referred to dates back to the end of the 14th century. It is the seventh dialogue taken from the Byzantine emperor Emmanuel’s book «διαλεξεις», which contains many exchanges between the Emperor and a Persian scientist about their religions. These dialogues took place in 1391 near Ankara in Turkey, and the Byzantine emperor was violent against Islam and its Prophet. The strong reaction by all parties to the Pope’s citation showed the ignorance of the sources and the continuous loss of trust between the Western and Eastern societies.
