Abstract

Rifat Al-Chadirji, a prominent Iraqi architect from the 20th century. his architectural philosophy sought to design traditional architecture through modern methods. This philosophy shaped his architectural style and has influenced many architects in the middle east to follow by his footsteps. Al-Chadirji has created many memorable structures like the monument of The Unknown Soldier in Baghdad and Insurance Company in Mosel. However, what had made his work so memorable is the philosophy which he employed to achieve the outcome of his designs. As time moved on Al-Chadirji’s influence persisted in the hearts of the following architects as they embraced his philosophy. Sadly, in the past 20 years, Iraq’s architectural identity was severely damaged by the chaos post 2003 invasion. This chaos caused a decline in both architecture integrity and urban expansion. The unorganized rapid expansion along with the chaotic construction resulted in a landscape that lacks coherence and planning. The introduction of new materials and the method they were used in further disconnected the architecture from the roots of the Iraqi heritage. Roots that Al-Chadirji sought to protect. Instead, they offered an international monumental look, disregarding the traditional one. The goal of this project is to create research center dedicated to developing contemporary architecture to meet the Iraqi aesthetics. The center aims to educate the public about the importance of Iraq’s architectural heritage. Furthermore, the center aspires to be a place for young architects and researchers to explore in developing the architectural heritage in methods that respond to Iraq’s heritage and the current technologies. By doing the latter, the architectural thought would evolve thus ensuring that the Iraqi heritage which Rifat Al-Chadirji sought to preserve continues to serve as an inspiration for future Iraqi architects.
