L’épitaphe d’un militaire romain en Orient

Abstract

Une plaque de marbre conservée dans une collection libanaise porte des inscriptions inédites gravées sur chacune des deux faces de l’objet. L’une, en grec, très détruite, est une dédicace religieuse. L’autre, en latin, constitue l’épitaphe bien préservée d’un militaire appartenant à une troupe mal connue de l’armée romaine de Syrie : la cohors II Ligurum.

A marble slab belonging to a Lebanese collection bears two unpublished inscriptions carved on both sides of the object. One, in Greek, is a religious dedication that has been severely erased. The other, in Latin, is the well-preserved epitaph of a soldier belonging to a little-known troop of the Roman army in Syria: the cohors II Ligurum.

لوحة من الرخام، محفوظة ضمن مجموعة لبنانيّة، تحمل نقوشًا غير منشورة محفورة على جهتي اللوحة. إحدى الجهتين نقش عليها باليونانيّة، هي عبارة عن لوحة دينيّة مهشّمة للتكريس. الجهة الأخرى كتب عليها باللاتينيّة وهي شاهد قبر محفوظ جيدًا لجندي ينتمي إلى فرقة غير معروفة في الجيش الروماني في سوريا تسمى : المجموعة الثانية ليغوريا
