The Maronite Icons of Cyprus: a Testimony of Historic Presence

Abstract

The Maronite Church of Cyprus preserves a rich cultural heritage, including a number of religious icons, frescoes and monuments. Most of the icons date from the Ottoman period (1571 - 1878) and can be found in the Maronite villages of Northern Cyprus. The article discusses the Maronite icons of Cyprus and the traditional style particular to the island before the introduction of European influences. The use of the Arabic language appears on two icons dating from the end of the 19th century while the Greek appeared in the 17th century and earlier.

L'Église maronite de Chypre conserve un patrimoine culturel riche, comprenant nombre d’icônes religieuses, fresques et monuments. La plupart des icônes date de la période ottomane (1571-1878) et se trouvent dans des villages maronites du nord de Chypre. L’article analyse ces icônes en tant que témoignages de la présence maronite sur l’île et du style traditionnel avant l’introduction des influences européennes. Deux icônes du XIXe siècle contiennent des inscriptions en arabe, alors que la langue grecque était utilisée depuis le XVIIe siècle ou avant.
