Title: | Understanding diabetes : awareness campaign | Authors: | Khansa, Nesrine El | Advisors: | Jaalouk, Lina Y | Keywords: | Public health, diabetes mellitus, healthcare, awareness | Subjects: | Diabetes--Lebanon--Prevention Awareness Pharmacist and patient University of Balamand--Dissertations Dissertations, Academic |
Issue Date: | 2023 | Abstract: | This practicum report outlines the experiences and outcomes of a public health project focused on raising awareness about diabetes mellitus in Lebanon. The project aimed to highlight the role of pharmacists in the public health sector, emphasize the importance of lifestyle modifications in preventing diabetes, and reach out to the community through various approaches. The results of the internship demonstrated significant achievements in terms of reaching out to over 250 individuals aged 30 and above. Through one-on-one awareness sessions, the intern successfully educated individuals about public health and the role of public health professionals in their everyday lives. Additionally, a considerable number of individuals expressed interest in getting their blood glucose levels tested, leading to the identification of several cases with abnormal glucose levels. Challenges such as noncompliance with medication and self-monitoring of blood glucose were also observed. Furthermore, the internship contributed to the intern's knowledge by attending trainings, gaining insights into learning about new fields in public health. The experience of preparing reports and collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and communicating public health data also enhanced the intern's capacity to undertake evidence-based practice. On a personal level, the intern developed various skills, including increased self-confidence, improved communication skills, conflict resolution skills, enhanced observation skills, and greater sensitivity towards public health issues. These skills were cultivated through hands-on experiences, engaging with patients, and dealing with diverse individuals from the community. Based on the findings and experiences, several recommendations are proposed. These include the need for routine awareness campaigns in healthcare centers, enhancing access to appropriate medical advice and care, advocating for early screening and detection of chronic diseases, promoting a healthy lifestyle through events and activities, and involving public health professionals from diverse backgrounds to optimize patient care. Additionally, targeting younger age groups with health awareness campaigns is essential. Recommendations for the organization where the project was implemented focus on sustainability, including ensuring ongoing awareness initiatives, maintaining access to healthcare services, and leveraging community partnerships. |
