أسوار مدينة دمشق في كتابات الحجّاج الأوروبيّين (القرن الرابع عشر - مطلع القرن السادس عشر)

Abstract

شهدت أسوار دمشق عبر التاريخ سلسلة من التطورّات والتغيّرات والإضافات على بنائها، ولعبت دورًا أساسيًّا في الدفاع عن المدينة وحماية سكّانها. ومنذ القرن السادس الميلادي، زار حجّاج أوروبيّون مدينة دمشق وأعطوا وصفًا دقيقًا للمدينة، وخصّصوا قسمًا في كتاباتهم لوصف أسوارها. ومنذ أواخر القرن الرابع عشر، ازداد اهتمام الحجّاج بأسوار دمشق وكتبوا روايات عنها صارت متداولة ولاقت انتشارًا واسعًا في الأوساط الأوروبيّة منذ منتصف القرن الخامس عشر. فما سبب اهتمام الحجّاج الأوروبيّين بدمشق؟ ولماذا احتلّت أسوارها مكانًا هامًّا في كتاباتهم؟ وما المعلومات التي تفرّد بذكرها الحجّاج الأوروبيّون عن أسوار دمشق ولم تذكرها المصادر الأخرى المعاصرة، بخاصّة العربيّة؟

Throughout history, the walls of Damascus underwent a series changes and additions, playing a fundamental role in the defence of the city and the protection of its inhabitants. From the sixth century onwards, European pilgrims visited Damascus and gave precise descriptions of the city, devoting parts of their writings describing its walls. From the end of the fourteenth century, the pilgrims’ interest in the walls increased, and stories about them circulated in European circles, especially during the mid-fifteenth century. What were the reasons for the European pilgrims’ interest in Damascus? Why did its walls figure prominently in their accounts? And what information did European pilgrims provide about the walls of Damascus which was not mentioned by other contemporary sources, notably in the Arabic language?

Tout au long de l’histoire, les murailles de Damas connurent une série d'évolutions, de changements et d'ajouts à sa construction, et jouèrent un rôle fondamental dans la défense de la ville et la protection de ses habitants. Dès le VIe siècle, les pèlerins européens visitèrent Damas et donnèrent une description précise de la ville, consacrant une partie de leurs écrits à la description de ses murailles. À partir de la fin du XIVe siècle, l'intérêt des pèlerins pour les murailles de Damas accrut et des histoires à leur sujet furent largement diffusées en Europe à partir du milieu du XVe siècle. Quelle était la raison de l'intérêt des pèlerins européens pour Damas ? Et pourquoi ses murailles occupaient-elles une place importante dans leurs écrits ? Et quelles informations les pèlerins européens fournissaient sur les murailles de Damas qui n’étaient pas mentionnées par d'autres sources contemporaines, notamment arabes ?
