Global Scale Sociolinguistics: Some Application to Lebanon

Abstract

Sociolinguists make the distinction between the macro and micro spheres. When we treat the choice of language for a specific role or function in a particular country or region, we are in the macrosphere. When we are concerned with code switching in daily conversation, we are in the microsphere. Global scale sociolinguistics is basically macro-sociolinguistics. The sociology of language universe (global scale) has two dimensions: the descriptive tradition and the quantitative tradition. In order to meaning fully apply global scale sociolinguistics to Lebanon, data need to be gathered on the functional utility of the three languages (arabic, french, english) in some public domains.

Les sociolinguistes distinguent entre macrosphère et microsphère. Quand nous abordons le choix linguistique pour un rôle ou une fonction spécifique dans un pays ou une région, nous sommes dans la macrosphère. Par contre, lorsque nous examinons le changement de code linguistique dans l'usage quotidien, nous sommes dans la microsphère. La sociolinguistique universelle est principalement une macro-sociolinguistique. La sociologie de l'univers de la langue (universelle) a deux dimensions: la tradition descriptive et la tradition quantitative. Afin d'appliquer adéquatement la sociolinguistique universelle au Liban, il faut collecter des données sur l'utilité fonctionnelle des trois langues en usage (l'arabe, le français et l'anglais) dans plusieurs domaines publics.
