Why Genoa? The Significance of Genoa in Daniel Deronda

Abstract

Genoa, the old Italian crusading port, is the hometown of Derondn from which he will set out on his Zionist quest to liberate Palestine. Genoa in George Eliot's Daniel Derondn is a place of revelation and judgement. Through the history and traditions of the city, the major events and themes of the book are unified. Perhaps Eliot was refering to this vast web of metaphor and allusion that she has spun around the old city when she asserted that she meant "everything in the book to be related to everything else there." Only the reputation of Genoa is rather tarnished, and the associations Eliot makes between the city and the characters in the novel are basically negative. By relating Gneoa so closely to Daniel and his quest, the novelist cannot be very positive about the Zionist aspirations of the characters in the novel.

Gênes, l'ancien port italien des Croises, est la ville d'où partira Daniel Deronda pour entreprendre sa quête sioniste pour libérer la Palestine. Dans l'œuvre de Georges Eliot, Daniel Deronda, Gênes est un lieu de révélation et de jugement. A travers l'histoire et la tradition de celle ville se précisent les évènements et les thèmes majeurs du livre. Eliot voulait semble-t-il renvoyer à un vaste tissu de métaphores et d'allusions cousues autour de celle ancienne cite et affirmer que "tout dans ce livre doit être rattaché à des choses autres que ceux qui se trouvent dans le livre même". La réputation de Gênes est quelque peu ternie, et les associations qu'avance Eliot entre la cité et les personnages du roman sont foncièrement négatives. En rattachant intimement Gênes à Deronda et à sa quête, le romancier ne saurait être très positif à l'égard des aspirations sionistes des personnages du roman.

جنوى، المرفأ الإيطالي الصليبي القديم، هي المدينة التي انطلق منها دانيال ديروندا في بحثه الصهيوني لتحرير فلسطين . فجنوى، في رواية جورج إليوت، دانيال ديروندا، هي مكان للرؤيا ومكان للحساب. فمن خلال تاريخ وتقاليد هذه المدينة تتحد الأحداث والأغراض الرئيسية للكتاب. ربما كان إليوت يهدف الى إحالتنا الى نسيج واسع من الاستعارات والتلميحات المحاكة حول هذه المدينة القديمة ليؤكد أن "كل شيء في هذا الكتاب يجب إرجاعه الى أشياء أخرى غير تلك الموجودة فيه". لقد ثلم صيت جنوى، كما وأن التداعيات التي يقيمها إليوت بين المدينة وشخصيات الرواية سلبية أساسا. عبر ربطه الشديد لجنوى بشخصية ديروندا وبحثه، لا يبدو ان الروائي يقف موقفا إيجابيا من الأمنيات الصهيونية لأبطال روايته
