Abstract:
As the title of this presentation suggests, I shall focus my attention on the attitude of George Khodr (1923-), Byzantine Orthodox bishop of Mount-Lebanon, towards Western culture as it is expressed and experienced within the framework of modernity. In fact, such an approach presents the advantage of enabling us to take notice of a crucial phenomenon of Western history and present, as it is perceived by one of the most outstanding contemporary thinkers and Church leaders in the Near East. The fact that Khodr usually opts for active analysis and pertinent critique, instead of going the way of passive observation, makes it highly interesting to explore his attitude regarding the issue in question; a task that, as far as I know, has not been performed yet.
