Issue Date: | 2015 | Conference: | ACAPS International Congress (16th : 26-28 october 2015 : Nantes,France) | Abstract: | The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of weight status on hip geometry and Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of proximal Femur in a group of Lebanese elderly women. 437 Elderly Lebanese women [75.4 ± 4.7 years] were allocated to either of 3 groups: 141 obese, 192 overweight and 104 normal-weight according to body mass index (BMI) values (WHO, 2000). The BMD of the neck femur, the BMD of the total hip region and the hip geometrical indices [cross-sectional area, cross-sectional moment of inertia, femur strength index, and hip axis length] were measured by DXA. In conclusion, this study suggests that in elderly women, obesity is associated with higher hip bone mineral density values, and greater hip geometric indices of bone strength. |
