Abstract:
The Conflict between the Ottoman and the Lebanese Identities in the Moutasarifat of Mount Lebanon in 1912 (in Arabic)
Is Lebanon Ottoman or foreign? This question was raised in the Mutasarrifate of Mount Lebanon and Beirut city in 1912. Mont Lebanon and Beirut newspapers discussed it for weeks, and it was echoed in the capitals of the world’s powers after the visit of a faction of the Ottoman army in Beirut and Baabda, the location of the Government of the Lebanese Mutasarifate. Disturbances took place and the visit was denounced as it as feared that the visit was an attempt to violate the order of Mount Lebanon and to attack its privileges. The article examines why the question was discussed by the newspapers with such violence.
