L’inscription arabe de l’église des Saints-Serge-et-Bacchus à Kaftoun. Tentative de reconstitution de l’histoire du monastère

Abstract

Le déchiffrement de l’inscription arabe peinte sur la frise qui cintre la nef de l’église des Saints-Serge-et-Bacchus à Kaftoun nous a mené, malgré son état lacunaire, à identifier le patriarche au nom duquel sont dédiées les peintures murales de l’église. Le fait de dédier les peintures à un patriarche ou que le patriarche lui-même dédie ces peintures à l’église signifie que celui-ci détenait une place particulière au sein du monastère, ou que son accession au siège patriarcal avait quelque chose de spécifique pour Kaftoun. Au terme de cette enquête, nous avons pu formuler une hypothèse plus précise concernant non seulement l’origine des peintures de l’église Saints-Serge-et-Bacchus mais aussi de l’icône de la Vierge et du Baptême qui se trouve au monastère de Notre-Dame de Kaftoun et qui s’avère d’un style très proche de celui des fresques.

The deciphering of the Arabic inscription painted on the frieze which makes the perimeter of the nave in the Church of the Saints Serge and Bacchus in Kaftoun has led us, despite its poor state of preservation, to identify the patriarch in whose name the murals of the church were dedicated. The fact of dedicating the paintings to a patriarch or the patriarch himself dedicates these paintings to the church means that this one occupied a special place within the monastery, or that his accession to the patriarchal see had something specific for Kaftoun. At the end of this investigation, we were able to formulate a more precise hypothesis concerning not only the origin of the paintings in the church of Saints Sergius and Bacchus, but also of the icon of the Virgin and Baptism which is found in the monastery of Notre-Dame de Kaftoun and which turns out to be in a style very close to that of the frescoes.

إن محاولة فك وقراءة الكتابة العربية التي تزنر الافريز الذي يحيط بصحن كنيسة مار سركيس وباخوس في كفتون، أوصلتنا، بالرغم من رداءة وضعها، إلى معرفة اسم البطريك الذي خصصت لأجله جداريات الكنيسة. إن كانت هذه الصور قد خصصت على شرف البطريرك أو أن البطريرك هو الذي مولها، دليل على الأهمية الخاصة التي ينعم بها البطريرك بالنسبة لهذا الدير، كما وأن تربعه على الكرسي البطريركي له معنى مميز بالنسبة لكفتون. لقد توصلنا في سياق بحثنا هذا إلى تحديد أصل جداريات مار سركيس وباخوس وكذلك أيقونة العذراء والعماد المحفوظة في دير سيدة كفتون والتي تتسم بأسلوبها القريب جدا من أسلوب الجداريات
