Abstract:
The colon is the major site for water and electrolyte absorption. Previous work in our lab has shown that total colectomy alters the absorptive function of the small intestine for glucose. The purpose of the present study is to investigate whether a possible hormonal mechanism is responsible for the absorptive alterations of glucose that occur in the jejunum post-colectomy. Aldosterone was inhibited using spironolactone injections for a period of 15 days, during which, food and water intakes and feces consistency were documented. Glucose absorption was also measured using in-vivo single pass perfusion at day 15. Results have revealed a significant decrease in glucose absorption upon inhibition of aldosterone 15 days post-colectomy. A failure to regain weight loss, an increase in water intake, and no change in food intake were observed in aldosterone inhibited rat models. These results suggest a significant role for aldosterone in maintaining glucose and water absorption post-colectomy.
