Abstract:
Earthquakes are a sudden phenomenon that occurs worldwide and leaves destruction behind. Many methods were studied to decrease the aftermath of an earthquake. For this reason seismic design came into light as well as dampening mechanism and shock absorbents. The earthquake bracelet is the simple idea of digging a gap around the building and engineering the fill to provide a desirable behavior under earthquake load. This study explores the feasibility of this idea and of the conditions that are required to make it effective. We found encouraging results that such an idea is feasible and the requirements on how to achieve this.
