Issue Date: 2017
Abstract:
A bumper is a thin walled structure that protects pedestrians and the car itself from crash impacts. The objective of this project is to increase the crashworthiness of the bumper by applying tailoring techniques. To accomplish this, first a real scaled model is adopted and implemented into the FEM. The model is developed with parameters and constraints simulating the effect of a full frontal NCAP crash. Linear and nonlinear effects are also investigated. Failure criteria is set to monitor the simulation. Two different approaches of tailoring, differential heat treatment and tailor rolling, are then performed. A comparison is drawn between the two, and the improvements of tailoring the original model is presented. Recommendations are suggested in the end for future work.
