Abstract:
While the Arab world faces a boom in charity work, NGOs and fundraising, there is lack of empirical resources that talk about this growing topic. When we decided to illustrate for the first time in Lebanon a specific case of a successful NGO that relies purely on donations and fundraising, the first that came to our minds was the Childrens Cancer Center of Lebanon (CCCL). This organization is supporting the ultimate noble cause of Dany Thomass belief that "No child should die in the dawn of life". CCCL managed throughout the years to build and maintain the most respected and decent reputation, while growing the numbers of donors, partners and supporters. We decided to build a qualitative case with an inductive approach. It was based on an exploratory and explanatory study. Interviews were found to be the most suitable strategy to collect data for this case study. We used a combination of semi-structured and in depth interviews where all interviewees where met face to face. Our interviewees were CCCLs Chairman, General Manager, PR and Communications Manager, Fundraising Manager, Budgeting Specialist and Patients Relations Manager and four CCCL partners. The following were our findings: fundraising techniques that CCCL implements, the challenges faced, and CCCL partners along with their benefits and challenges. We concluded upon our investigations that CCCL is implementing a well-built fundraising mix that allows them to maintain a constant level of yearly donations and sometimes exceed their targeted budgets. The key for this success was the team work spirit and high collaboration. Furthermore, CCCL Board and Management have devised a very sophisticated and systematic proactive strategy to overcome all the challenges that a country like Lebanon constantly faces.
