Issue Date: | 2012 | Abstract: | This report covers the details of developing a three-dimensional (3D) router machine. A 3D router machine uses computer automated tools in order to create objects from different types of materials such as metals, woods, glasses, etc. A step by step description and study of the different parts of the project is presented in a simple manner supported by figures, schematics and diagrams from the very conceptual stage to the final implemented result. First after an image is drawn on AutoCAD, data is extracted in a standard format based on G-code. Second, the obtained G-code is fed to Matlab in order to transform this code into X, Y, and Z coordinates. An important feature of our design is the implementation of interpolation algorithm based on Bresenham algorithm. This algorithm fills in points between two given points in order to generate as close to a straight line as possible. This leads to a better resolution; thus a better approximation to the drawn image. After interpolation and shifting data to the positive plane, the resulted points are transferred to the hardware board through the serial port where they will be executed as sequential commands by the microcontroller. This results in the image being drilled as instructed by the user. A graphical user interface is provided that allows the user to interact with the machine in two different modes: manually and automatically. This gives the user an added feature, besides automatic drilling, to be able to control the machine manually as well. |
