Subjects: Bridges--Design and construction
Issue Date: 2011
Abstract:
This project consists of the design of a bridge structure according to AASHTO LRFD bridge design specifications. The bridge, which connects Beirut to Saida (already constructed after the July 2006 war), is made of precast, prestressed girders with a cast-in-situ deck on top. The main objective of this project is to propose a more economical solution compared to the existing solution based on AASHTO LRFD and specific requirements for the project by the relevant authorities. As the bridge is located near the sea, the service load tensile stress limit in the precast girder section is set at zero (extremely aggressive conditions) in order to avoid cracks in concrete and to avoid corrosion of steel.
