Osteoporosis is associated not only with a decrease in bone mineral density (BMD) but also with a microarchitectural deterioration of bone (1–3). This leads to an increase in fractures at several sites such as the lumbar spine (1–3). BMD measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) is the best single predictor of fractures in elderly women (3). However, BMD is not a direct measurement of bone strength because bone strength is influenced by several other factors, such as geometry, cortical porosity, and microarchitecture (4).en_US
