Egypt's national identity according to 'Abdallah al-Nadim

Abstract

This article examines the constituents of Egypt's national identity as understood by 'Abdallah al-Nadim, the orator of the 'Urabi revolution. It seems that al-Nadim was preoccupied constantly with one single idea: Egypt. Throughout his career he tried to define the nature of the Egyptian "watan", its political and economic system, and its social and cultural background. The paper will argue that al-Nadim presented a complex, evolved definition of an Egyptian nationalism based on specific elements which he considered necessary for the creation of an Egyptian national identity.

تبحث هذه المقالة في مكوّنات الهويّة الوطنيّة كما فهمها عبدالله النديم، خلال حياته الحافلة، أن يحدّد طبيعة وماهيّة الوطن المصري ونظامه الساسيّ والاقتصاديّ، فضلاً عن مكوّناته الاجتماعية والثقافية. تحاول هذه الدراسة أن تبرهن من خلال كتابات النديم الصحفيّة، انه قدّم فكرة متطوّرة ومركّبة عن القومية المصرية ارتكزت إلى عناصر محدّدة أساسية لتكوين الهويّة الوطنيّة المصريّة
