Abstract:
This project reports on my intervention in ENGL102 classes during the spring 2023-2024 semester when exploring the potential of supplementing existing readings in the ENGL102 handbook with online, YouTube videos. Following informal chats with ENGL102 teachers about the possible use of YouTube videos as supplementary material for readings in the handbook, interventions took place in five sections of ENGL102. The interventions consisted of playing YouTube videos in class on argumentative topics being discussed as per the syllabus, with students filling out accompanying task-based worksheets as a pre-writing activity. The students
were then advised to refer to the worksheets while developing their documented paragraph practices in preparation for the upcoming graded assignment of the same nature. The purpose of the intervention was to check whether the use of multimedia resources such as YouTube videos can help students substantiate their arguments when writing their documented paragraph. In other words, this exploratory project aims to examine the impact of supporting readings with YouTube videos on students’ content development on a paragraph level.
