The Rise and Fall of Assyrian Nationalism

Abstract

More than 150 years after the birth of modern Assyrian nationalism, it is safe to say that it has failed. It was not able to inspire and mobilize most of the Assyrian people and did not achieve its goals. According to the established narrative, the reasons were the Assyrian genocide, which disrupted the process of nation-building, and the strong opposition not only to the Assyrian national movement, but even to the Assyrian name by several church leaders. This article describes the failure and the reasons presented.

Plus de 150 ans après la naissance du nationalisme assyrien moderne, son échec est clair, n’ayant pas réussi à mobiliser la population assyrienne et d’atteindre ses objectifs. D’après le récit communément admis, la raison en fut le génocide assyrien, qui a perturbé le processus de formation de la nation, et la forte opposition non seulement au mouvement national assyrien, mais aussi à l’appellation « assyrienne » par de nombreux chefs religieux. Cet article propose de décrire cet échec et les raisons avancées.
