Aspect, Tense and the Missing Link

Abstract

Comerie's analysis of the system of aspect in English is based on the imperfective vs perfective dichotomy. However, this dichotomy fails to explain the type of aspect expressed by "have + past participle". I refer to Guillaume's distinction between the time contained in the event and the time containing the event, his definition of chronogenesis, and his description of aspect in French, in order to demonstrate that it is not just a matter of perfectivity, of representing the event "as a single whole", but of representing it from a point afterwards, in its result phase. Quite independently of how universe time is represented, "have + past participle" views the internal temporal constituency of an event from a point outside and afterward it. In other words, the basis of the system aspect in English is the inside vs afterwards dichotomy.

L'analyse de Comerie sur l'aspect du verbe en anglais repose sur la dichotomie imperfectif vs perfectif. Toutefois, cette dichotomie n'explique pas le type d'aspect exprimé par "have + participe passé". Nou nous référons à la distinction proposée par Guillaume entre le temps contenu dans l'action et le temps contenant l'action, à sa définition de la chronogenèse et à sa description de l'aspect en français, et ce afin de démontrer qu'il ne s'agit pas seulement de perfectivité ou de représentation de l'action "en tant qu'une seule entité", mais plutôt de sa représentation à partir de son résultat ou phase ultérieure. Indépendamment de la manière selon laquelle le temps d'univers est représenté, "have + participe passé" considère la constitution temporelle interne d'une action d'un point de vue extérieur et postérieur à cette même action. En d'autres termes, le fondement du système de l'aspect en anglais est dans la dichotomie intérieur/postérieur.
