The Anti-Greek Riots of 1955 and their Impact upon the Greek Minority of Istanbul

Abstract

Although it is always difficult for historians to distance themselves from events in the recent past which have impinged directly upon their own lives, the following paper is an attempt to present a concise and rationalist account of the anti-Greek riots of 1955 and examine their impact upon the Greek minority of Istanbul. It further aims to demonstrate the political context of Turkish nationalism while taking into account the motives of the various protagonists and the underlying causes.
