The latter group joined the ruling elite after the surrender of Mecca (Donner 1981:274- 275, Shoufani 1972:25-26). Since the role of ʻUmar b. al-Khattab in the power struggle within this elite is still unresolved, an inquiry focusing on this subject might bring some precision to our understanding of the relations among these groups. |
