Historical regions have drawn the attention of architects and planners. Dealing with historical regions becomes more complex when they are populated. The debate has often centred on the necessity of evacuating their population before starting any development or conservation work. Syria is characterized by the abundance of historical locations, especially populated ones. The question is: How can their inhabitants continue living in situ without altering the historical value and the remarkable urban and architectural features of these sites. Should they be considered, along with their inhabitants as a resource for economic and social development?en_US
