The foundation of the Orthodox Charitable Society of Beirut in 1868 contributed to the progress of Beirut’s society. This Society divided its activities through the Committee of charity, Committee of aid, the Committee for travel, and the Committee of property and school representatives. These committees did receive revenue in return for their work: their sole purpose was charity as well as spreading education and culture. Helping patients, burying the deceased, taking care of prisoners, helping foreigners and helping them travel, helping registered and non-registered poor people, and distributing flour and rice were the main activities of the Committees.en_US
