The Synod of Nicosia of 1738. A Synod for the Maronites of Cyprus

Abstract

The article discusses the Synod for the Maronites of Cyprus, which was held at the Church of the Holy Cross in Nicosia on 3rd March 1738. The original document was discovered in the Archives of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith in Rome and is presented here for the first time. The article discusses the contents of the 1738 Synod in relation to the situation of the Maronites, their inter-communal associations and their interactions with the other denominations on the island. It also stresses the importance and the validity of the Synod, and whether it was held in response to the needs of the Maronites, or simply served the interests of the institution it represented.

Cet article s’intéresse au synode des maronites de Chypre qui s’est tenu en l’église Sainte-Croix de Nicosie le 3 mars 1738. Il est basé sur des archives inédites de la Congrégation pour la propagation de la foi à Rome en ce qui concerne la situation des maronites, leurs associations communautaires et les interactions avec les autres confessions de l’île, cherchant à déterminer le rôle de ce synode vis-à-vis de leurs besoins propres ou simplement ceux de l’institution qu’il représente.

سينكبّ هذا المقال على الاهتمام بمجمع الموارنة القبارصة الذي عقد في كنيسة الصليب الأقدس في نيقوسيا في الثالث من آذار العام 1738. سيعتمد على محفوظات غير منشورة لمجمع نشر الإيمان في روما تتعلّق بوضع الموارنة، بجمعيّاتهم وعلاقاتهم مع الطوائف الأخرى في الجزيرة، كلّ ذلك للوصول إلى تحديد دور المجمع في تلبية احتياجات تلك الجمعيّات، أو في تلبية متطلّبات الكنيسة المارونيّة التي يلتئم المجمع باسمها
