Lebanon’s transportation sector is in a terrible state, from lack of decent public transportation to bad road quality all which leads to an increase in traffic and yearly accidents. Public transportation in Lebanon lacks management and smart transit systems. The government allows public transportation vehicles to move without any restrictions or planning thus leading to a high number of private vehicles causing more traffic. There are more than 1,500,000 vehicles transporting in Lebanon, a country with a population of around 5,000,000. To decrease the number of private vehicles circulation, accidents, pollution and increase safety, a proper public transportation system should be built with proper management. An efficient public transportation system will definitely improve the level of service of the roadways together with traffic lights at major intersections. The initial phase of the project is to determine the level of service of the existing conditions of the main road (four-lane collector) from Aitou, located in Zgharta Caza, to Abou Samra, located in Tripoli. Next, a traffic light system is proposed at the intersection of this road with the minor two-lane road leading to the town of Miziara and determines the level of service. The results obtained from the traffic software HCS with the proposed traffic light show that, with the given conditions, the level of service will improve. Additionally, the execution of a decent bus transit system will definitely lead to an improvement in the level of service and to a decrease in the number of accidents.en_US
