This thesis presents an exploratory research study conducted in two schools in Abu Dhabi undergoing government educational reform. The study explores perceptions of principals and teachers of the role educational leaders are playing in changing their schools in order to meet and sustain the educational reform as outlined in the Professional Standards for Principals (PSP) created by Abu Dhabi Educational Council (ADEC). The importance of this study resides in its attempt to shed light on how the elements of leadership as outlined in the PSP are being interpreted and practiced. Quantitative and qualitative data collection instruments were used to identify common and different perceptions of school principals and educational staff of leadership roles in achieving the government vision and standard expectations in this area. Triangulated findings which emerged from this study revealed that not all of the elements of effective leadership as outlined in the PSP are being practiced at either of the target schools. Concerns and challenges which accompany school reform were also voiced by the school principals and teachers.en_US
