Abstract: 
When a Synchronous machine undergoes a disturbance, the rotor exhibits electromechanical oscillations. The Power System Stabilizer (PSS) is used to help damping these oscillations and thus improves the stability of the system. In this paper, the Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) model is described and simulated for a unit step input in mechanical torque. The conventional Lead/Lag compensator and the Fuzzy PSS (FPSS) are used as PSSs. Different membership functions are tested for the FPSS to yield the best performance. The Matlab PID block, used as a PSS, is tuned for optimal and robust performance. The three different techniques were compared and benchmarked.
