The purpose of this report is to present how to proceed with building a GIS platform for a project, when we dont have any database to start with, and using MapInfo professional as GIS software. This report will show different procedures and manipulations in MapInfo to develop this project. A detailed tutorial for using MapInfo is drawn up in the Appendix to explain features in details. The project has been chosen in Tripoli, Lebanon. Our aim is to create the platform able to facilitate the administration task to manage the city, starting with a census of existing building, population, activities … To end with preparing the background for any further project (infrastructure, population needs, address geocoding, strategy of permits, economics evolution, etc.) Information is gathered over a given region of buildings, so census of building name is done, also population statistics in each building, number of floors, etc... The data development process in this project will focus on infrastructure estimated needs, but could be expanded later to cover wide statistical purposes through the scope of a civil engineer, especially in terms of management. Through the projection phase, the roads and buildings are quantitatively estimated for any maintenance project, such as asphalt quantities, front building materials replacement, concrete needs etc… From the data created based on the building layout projection, crossed with the population statistics done, the area of each building is calculated using the number of floors, so the volume of concrete can be approximated too. With this built information, the needs in water supply and the waste water canalization could be easily estimated too, according to the gathered population data for each building. Preliminary design could be founded for any further project.en_US
