Biography
Samer K. Abi Kaed Bey received his Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical from the Lebanese American University, Lebanon, in 2001. In the same year, he joined the Department of Information Technology at Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh, UK, where he received his Master of Science degree in Mechatronics. He was awarded the Edinburgh Napier University medal for his outstanding achievements in Robotics and Cybernetics in 2002. Previous work experience was obtained from Daewoo Motors and Middle East Airlines, Lebanon. He also worked as an Engineer at a recycling company, Envirotech, London, and as a Production Engineer/CNC setter and programmer at Radial for designing customized motorbike products and braking systems, in Kent, UK. In 2004, he pursued his studies for the Ph.D. degree in Measurement and Instrumentation in the Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering department at City University, London. He undertook research in novel optical instrumentation, especially in fiber optics-based sensor development using UV lasers. His research was extensively published with a focus on both spontaneous and laser-based fiber optical sensing systems for physical and chemical applications. In 2008, he joined Southampton University as a post-doctoral research assistant in the Underwater Mechatronics Systems Laboratory at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton. He designed, developed, and field-tested reliable high-performance measuring systems for surface and full ocean-depth sensor systems for environmental applications. His work was recognized in major journals and at international conferences. Dr. Samer’s academic experience started in 2004 across multi-disciplinary majors in the Mechanical, Electrical, Control, Computer, and Petro-Chemical domains. He was a Faraday associate member in Intersect (Intelligent Sensing Faraday Partnership) and was also a member of the IEEE and the IMechE. Dr. Samer co-supervised multiple Ph.D. work and undergraduate projects in both the U.K. and Lebanon and received prestigious recognitions. In 2022, Dr. Samer joined Balamand University as an Assistant Professor in Mechatronics Engineering and Technology at the Souk-El-Gharb campus.
