Biography
Dr. Najib Gerges decided to join the University of Balamand in 1997 after a 14-year of distinguished professional engineering career in Lebanon, USA, and the Middle-East. As a BE graduate in Civil Engineering from the American University of Beirut in 1983, Dr. Gerges pursued his graduate studies and earned an MSc. and a PhD. in Civil Engineering from the University of South Florida, USA in 1987 and 1996, respectively. Additionally, Dr. Gerges has been a registered Professional Civil Engineer in the Order of Engineers and Architects, Tripoli, Lebanon and the Board of Professional Engineers (PE), Florida, USA, since 1983 and 1990, respectively.

Since his graduation, Dr. Gerges has accumulated a vast engineering experience, including transportation engineering (traffic and geometric design of roadways, pavement design, railroads, airports, tunnels, and harbors), water resources and environmental engineering (water and wastewater treatment plants, hydrology, hydraulics, groundwater), structural engineering (buildings and bridges), and management of projects (project scheduling, bill of quantities, quantity surveying, standards and specifications), in addition to teaching a wide variety of courses and conducting research, topped by chairing the Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of Balamand from 2012 until 2019.

Dr. Gerges has held managerial positions with various leading firms and regulatory agencies. Dr. Gerges has worked on major projects in the Middle East and USA and is familiar with the local and international laws and regulations, mainly the American Association of States and Highways Officials (AASHTO) criteria and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Guidelines. Dr. Gerges responsibilities included feasibility studies, development of master plans, detailed design, preparation of tender documents, pre-qualification of contractors, tender analysis, supervision of work, and operation and maintenance after the completion of the project. Dr. Gerges also has outstanding capabilities in coordinating fieldwork with design activities, establishing project concepts in conjunction with economic feasibility studies, as well as the overall management of projects.

Dr. Gerges is knowledgeable of a vast variety of software packages including management, hydrology and hydraulics, roadway geometric design, traffic design, geotechnical design, structural design, finite element, bridge design, and environmental design. Currently, Dr. Gerges is teaching water resources engineering courses (hydraulics/hydrology/applied hydraulics), environmental courses, management courses (project management/construction management), highway design, pavement, and traffic courses at the University of Balamand.

Dr. Gerges is actively involved in various research disciplines such as Materials, Concrete (Reinforced and Prestressed), Transportation (Traffic and Pavement), Project Management and has published articles in well reputed journals and presented his work in local and international conferences where he has received several awards. Dr. Gerges serves as an editorial board member and a reviewer for several well-reputed Civil Engineering journals and is very active in research, especially in the fields of Structures, Materials, Transportation, Water Resources, and Management.

Since joining the University of Balamand, Dr. Gerges has played a key role in enhancing and improving the Civil & Environmental Engineering program, ever since he has been advising civil engineering students at all levels, obtaining the ABET accreditation for the BS program, improving the students enrollment, winning various local and international awards, obtaining the ISO 9001 certification for the Civil & Environmental Engineering laboratories, continuously updating the BS, BE and MS curricula to best suit the industry demand and keep up with the latest development in software technology, assisting students in career placement and internship, signing MOU’s with well-reputable universities for joint Ph.D.’s, obtaining the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Student Chapter and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapter at the University of Balamand, obtaining a full-scholarship for MS students from the Advanced Construction Technology Services (ACTS), improving the Civil & Environmental Engineering laboratories, developing a state of the art Earthquake Engineering Laboratory and Materials Testing Laboratory, and providing public awareness to the students, the university, and the community (pilot wastewater treatment plant).
